Paralegal Peak Performance Pillars

Why is paralegal peak performance important? The third pillar is frequently overlooked and can make such a difference!

Everyone depends on you. Your attorney could not manage without you. You are the control center at home. You make sure your kids, spouse, (and even the dogs) are fed, have what they need (be it clothes or doctor appointments made), and all of the bills are paid on time. Your friends and family call for your help and advice.

You are everyone’s rock.

What do you need to make sure you maintain your peak performance?

You need to make sure that the most important person is on your list. In fact, that important person should be first on your list. And who is that important person?

The foundation of paralegal peak performance is YOU!

Self care isn't selfish

Your self-care is the cornerstone of your health and wellbeing. If you don’t prioritize your health, you won’t be your best self at work or in your life. Self-care can feel selfish, but it is not.

What are the pillars of paralegal peak performance?

Mind, body, and soul are the pillars of paralegal peak performance. Are your internal messages positive or negative? Are you plagued by worry or do you calmly contemplate the future with an understanding of what you can control? Are you fueling yourself with nutritious food?

Mind Body Soul

Meditation, a healthy diet and exercise, and time in nature are ways in which you can take care of your mind, body, and soul.

Are you thinking that you don’t have time to add anything else to your already overflowing plate, even if that something is you?

Prioritize making time for you. Follow the instructions flight attendants say before each flight: Put your oxygen mask on you before putting one on someone else.

You need to move your care up or onto your priority list. If you don’t take care of yourself, you will experience burnout and you will not be able to take care of everyone who is depending on you!

Boundaries are needed to create space for your peak performance pillars!

Only you can take care of yourself. To do so, create and maintain the boundaries so you have time for your self-care.

Boundaries

Learn to say NO. Unchain yourself from your electronic devices so that you can recharge YOU. You do not need to check your email constantly.

Remember that you are in control of yourself. Zealously protect the time you have carved out of your day for yourself.

Meditation

Meditation is the secret weapon that Google employees utilize to keep them from burnout, despite their legendary heavy workload. A regular meditation practice creates the ability for your mind to pause before reacting. A pause can be a powerful tool.

Meditation

You do not have to spend hours of meditation to receive the benefits. Start with a practice of 5 minutes daily. There are numerous guided meditation apps and even just meditative music can be found on YouTube.

You and your sanity are worth 5 minutes of time.

Healthy Diet

According to Hippocrates, “If we could give every individual the right amount of nourishment and exercise, not too little and not too much, we would have found the safest way to health.”

Healthy Diet

Does a healthy diet seem like too much effort or too expensive? Are you worried that you would have to eliminate all of the foods that you love?

Food is fuel. Would you put bad gasoline in your car and expect it to run at its peak performance? You can’t expect your body to be its best if you give it bad fuel.

According to U.S. News, the best diet is the Mediterranean diet. The list of the top 10 best diets has similar elements – lots of fruits and vegetables, lean protein, and healthy fats.

Set yourself up for success by purchasing a rainbow of fruits and vegetables. Try new, tasty, healthy dishes.

Creating a weekly meal plan and shopping with a list can be great aids when establishing a healthier lifestyle.

If it is within your budget, you could even try one of the meal subscription boxes. Healthy, hassle-free meals made easy!

Give healthier eating a try. Your body will thank you for giving it the good fuel it needs to operate at peak performance.

Exercise

Movement is medicine

Exercise is an excellent way to manage stress. You may not like to exercise but you CAN move! Get up from your chair and walk. Or jump on a mini-trampoline. Or skip rope. Roller skate. Ride your bike. Dance.

Exercise

Have fun and move!

Don’t just sit at your desk. Look into a standing desk! Set an alarm and move around every hour or so. (You know you’ll be working on your computer for hours, but take movement breaks!!)

Once you have closed that laptop, find something you enjoy doing and do it. Try different things. YouTube can be your friend here. Low impact. Yoga. Dance classes. Aerobic classes. Strength training. Stretch. Exercises geared towards older folks. High-intensity low impact.

So many choices!

Take your dog for a walk. Swim. Run. Garden. Clean house. Find a workout buddy. Take an exercise class at a park. Pummel a heavy bag.

If it is in your budget, hire a personal trainer.

Time in nature

Spending time in nature is healing and good for the soul. Contemplating the vast night sky can remind you that today’s problems are truly not so big. Listening to the waves crash on the shore or the river flow downstream can reduce stress. Draw in the fresh forest air with each breath and release your worries with each exhalation.

Nature, rain on leaves

Set aside regular time in your schedule for your paralegal peak performance pillars: your mind, body, and soul. Prioritizing your care will ensure that you are regularly in top form and avoid burnout. As the rock that everyone relies on, everyone needs you to take care of yourself!
